CTE Affects Certain People as it Could Be in their Genes

Scientists have put their full focus upon the genetic code of people. They wish to determine in a better matter why some people develop a chronic problem of traumatic encephalopathy. This is a disease similar to that of Alzheimer’s, mainly associated with hits on the head in a repeated manner. The researchers at the CTE Center of Boston University, through a new study, said that there is a particular variant of the gene named, TMEM106B. It may well influence why certain people experience much more severe forms of the disease compared to others. Dr. Jesse Mez is an assistant professor of neurology at Boston University’s School of Medicine. He said that among all those people, who suffer from CET, people with a variation in genes are 2.5 times more likely to develop dementia. Dr. Mez was even a co-author of the study that got published on Saturday in the journal named Acta Neuropathologica Communications.

According to Mez, though the findings are in their early stage, still they are a step towards understanding the disease much better. It helps them to analyze in a biological as well as in a mechanistic manner, what exactly is going on in the brain during CTE. The authors of the study pointed out that their findings need to get investigated further in a larger group and repeated to make any definite conclusion. Dr. Sam Gandy, who is a professor of neurology and psychiatry, also the director of the Center for Cognitive Health at Mount Sinai in New York, said that the findings were just too premature. Hence, it could not account for other genes that might be involved in the disease, just like APOE4. Now, CTE can get diagnosed only after a person’s death. It is known to result from encountering head trauma on a repeated basis.

Dr. Geoff Manley was not involved in the study. He believes that more research is required with more number of individuals who are with and without long-term issues to fully understand their cause and effect. Jesse Mez believes that it will be of great value to understand the difference. According to Mez, this particular finding begins to explain all these kinds of differences.
